I haven’t ridden the Grom since I got ABS faults1 caused by my non-OEM final drive ratio. To resolve it, I ordered the 12oClockLabs SpeedoDRD Healer.
While the unit is well made, well priced and simple to configure with a single button and a single dual color LED - the instructions were lacking.
Preparation
The Honda Grom specific wiring instructions were just a paragraph long, without any pictures and relying on pre-existing knowledge of where each connector is located. I wished they pointed out exact location and which fairings need to be taken off to complete the install.
It turned out that on a second generation SF GROM, one needs to take both left and right fairings to get to the necessary wiring locations. This is about a 30min job to remember locations of and get all the fasteners and plastic body rivets removed and disengaged.
Finding the “white wire with green tracer next to 3-pin connector with empty center cavity”, for the speed sensor wire, took a bit of exploration, as most connectors are under rubber boots and not clearly visible. The sole installation diagram made sense only after I found the wire. haha.
Installation
The install itself was 5min.
- plug the 3-pin connectors on the right side of the frame, to pick up power, then zip-tie in place.
- plug the bullet connectors into “white wire with green tracer” on the left side of the frame, to correct sensor readings before they get to the ECU, then zip-tie in place.
Speedo Healer configuration was real easy. Hold for 5 blinks to enter “percentage correction mode”, hold until ‘red’ for negative correction or until ‘green’ for positive correction, then enter the three digits by holding the button down for number of blinks each digit is to represent. I needed negative(red) 1(blink) 2(blinks) 1(blink) - which is -12.1% correction.
Short ride later I confirmed with GPS that the speedo is within +-1mph. The ABS system should now be happy1.
It took another 20min to put all the fairings back on, make sure no fasteners were left over and that no 10mm were lost in the process.
Summary
The 12oClock SpeedoDRD Healer works really well and is easy to configure. I wish the manufacturer spent 10minutes to prepare a flyer with pictures, like mine here, to help clarify and speed up the installation.
