I needed to replace my failed vehicle navigator. I use Android phone without a sim card, mounted in a heavy duty case and riveted to a Ram-Ball, then mounted on a handle bar or a suction cup in a car window. Organic Maps app preloaded with offline maps provides navigation when motorcycling, on road trips or car renting when travelling.
Old Navigator
The failed navigator was an eight year old Motorola E4 running Android 7, which I left in a locked car in the window for two hot sunny summer days. The battery puffed up, but fortunately did not vent nor caught fire. The device was ancient, but operated offline, worked well, and was setup using a throw-away account and with only a single application configured.
New Navigator
For replacement, I found a 2025 Motorola Moto G with 128GiB storage, 4GiB ram, Android 16 and a very bright OLED 900nits screen for only $135. That plus an otter-style three piece case (those work best), 5/16" rivets with washers and a composite ram ball base, can be turned into a dedicated offline navigator in about 30 minutes. Frankly, installing all belated Android patches takes MUCH longer! In offline standby mode, it can wait for 6 days until the next ride, where it will be recharged from my Hornet’s USB charger.
Q. What about live-traffic?
I ride for fun on twisty backcountry and mountain roads on evenings and weekends - traffic is not a factor. But, for the rare occasions when it is, I connect the navigator to a hotspot on my primary phone in my pocket, and use Google Maps to check traffic.
The Pros
At $135, I don’t worry about it falling off, getting stolen, getting damaged by debris, getting wet, etc. It is effectively a throwaway “burner” phone without access to any of my data. It serves one purpose, provide bright screen to display gps navigation.

For the price of a motorcycle Quad-Lock, you can use a free hand-me-down phone for navigation. The most important factors are bright screen, usable battery and ability to run Organic Maps - current F-Droid builds run on Android 7+.
